Supreme sound: QED unveils Supremus Zr – its latest next-generation flagship loudspeaker cable

British audio specialist, QED, today introduces its next-generation flagship loudspeaker cable: Supremus Zr. Developed without compromise, Supremus Zr is the result of more than five decades of technological evolution and refinement.

Featuring leading-edge QED audio innovations, the new Zr model now boasts high-quality zirconia plugs and barrels. Used in watches and fountain pens and in automotive and aerospace industries, this advanced ceramic material is prized for its durability and high resistance to wear, temperature and eddy currents. Its lustrous surface also adds a luxury finish to the cable.

In conjunction with QED’s Aircore™ and Airloc™ technologies and a host of other cutting-edge designs, Supremus Zr represents the most effective way of preserving the integrity and fidelity of the analogue music signal from beginning to end that QED has ever achieved.

Key features at a glance

  • Zirconia Airloc™ design: NEW hard-wearing zirconia barrels and boots offerdurability and resistance to performance-affecting eddy currents, in one lustrous-looking material.
  • Cold weld system unifies the conductors and plug components for a lifetime of perfect functionality.
  • Rhodium-plated locking design ensures optimal contact between a speaker binding post and the cable plug for a maintenance-free connection.
  • Aircore technology delivers an even, consistent performance across the entire audible frequency range.
  • 6.2 mm2 ultra-low resistance conductors effectively allows your amplifier to exert complete control over your speakers.
  • Cryogenic treatment ensures aperfect cable microstructure for more natural tonality.

Zirconia Airloc™ design

NEW: Zirconia barrels and boots

The exceptionally high mechanical strength of zirconia, its remarkable resistance to scratches and general wear, and its glossily lustrous finish, all make it the ideal material for this cable’s barrels and boots. Not only are the Supremus Zr plugs gleaming and tactile, the electrically inert nature of zirconia also means eddy currents cannot become established and therefore plug-induced distortion remains vanishingly low.

Airloc™ cold weld system

Our high-pressure termination process compresses the conductors and plug together, creating a cold-welded area where conductors and plug effectively become one. Because all the air has been removed from the joint, there can be no oxidisation or degradation in conductivity – and that’s true for the entire lifetime of the cable.

Rhodium-plated locking design

Aside from its purely decorative properties – which are considerable – rhodium makes the surface of the Supremus Zr connectors very smooth, increasing the contact area and reducing resistance. Designed specifically for Supremus Zr cable, this unique contact expansion system securely clamps the rhodium-plated beryllium copper pins into the speaker terminals, while at the same time increasing the contact area of the plugs, simply by twisting the plug barrel until it is tight. And because it’s so very hard-wearing and resistant to oxidisation, rhodium can cope with the extra load exerted by our locking design – which ensures a perfect, maintenance-free connection.

Aircore™ Cordage

Aircore technology

Loudspeaker cables with large cross-sectional areas are prone to skin effect, where high-frequency analogue music signals are forced to the outside of the conductor, and proximity effect that disrupts current distribution. QED’s innovative Aircore technology combines hollow tubular conductors – to minimise the skin effect – with polyester insulation and a special spiral construction to reduce the proximity effect. This highly effective combination evens out current density and significantly improves the cable’s uniformity throughout the audio band.

6.2 mm2 ultra-low resistance conductors

Boasting a large cross-sectional area, the ultra-low resistance, silver-plated, oxygen-free copper conductors effectively bring the amplifier electrically much closer to the loudspeakers, enabling it to exercise better control over them, so the fidelity of the original music signal can be more accurately maintained.

Cryogenic treatment

Cryogenic treatment improves the microstructure of the copper core by eliminating crystalline dislocations. Numerous brass musical instruments at all points of the frequency range have been found to produce a better, more natural tone after deep cryogenic treatment.

QED celebrates 50 years with special edition Golden Anniversary XT speaker cable featuring X-Tube™ Plus technology

British audio specialist QED celebrates its 50th anniversary in style, with the introduction of its Golden Anniversary XT speaker cable. Representing the culmination of five decades of dedicated and extensive research, engineering and audio expertise, Golden Anniversary XT speaker cable is the ideal upgrade for any hi-fi enthusiast who wants to experience the sonic benefits of a high-end speaker cable – but at a real-world price.

Key features at a glance

  • NEW X-Tube™ Plus technology combines X-Tube™ with Aircore™ to deliver an even, consistent performance across the entire audible frequency range.
  • Ultra-pure Ohno Continuous Cast Copper and 99.999% oxygen-free copper conductor blend helps improve the signal path and signal retention.
  • Low Loss Ultra-Uniform Dielectric insulation boosts efficiency and reduces signal loss.
  • Airloc™ Forte banana plugs use a cold weld system for permanent attachment to the cable for improved contact area and reduced resistance.

50 years of innovation

QED has been designing and engineering class-leading and award-winning analogue and digital cables for five decades – and the Golden Anniversary XT is the latest demonstration of the company’s expertise.

Quality Electronic Design (QED) was formed in 1973 by forward-thinking hi-fi enthusiasts, Bob Abraham and Ian Vine. The company is now considered the original cable brand, having released QED 79 Strand, widely recognised as the world’s first “specialist” loudspeaker cable. This product demonstrated how cables could have a tangible impact on audio performance.

QED’s Genesis Report on loudspeaker cable design followed. This research established scientifically proven principles, which are as valid today as they were 28 years ago and informs all QED cable designs, including the pioneering X-Tube™ technology that enables precise and consistent signal delivery across the entire frequency range.

X-Tube™ Plus technology

QED’s innovative and proven X-Tube™ technology places a cable’s conductive material around a central hollow insulating rod – and the result is the elimination of the ‘skin effect’ that would otherwise force high-frequency analogue music signals to the outside of the conductor. And by combining X-Tube™ technology with its equally effective Aircore™ technology, QED also reduces the ‘proximity effect’ that can disrupt current distribution in a speaker cable. The result is X-Tube™ Plus: a ground-breaking cable geometry that ensures Golden Anniversary XT is a speaker cable with even, consistent performance across the entire audible frequency range.

Ultra-Pure Ohno Continuous Cast Copper conductors

Golden Anniversary XT uses a unique hybrid blend of 99.999% oxygen-free copper (‘OFC’) and Ultra-Pure Ohno Continuous Cast Copper (‘UP-OCC’) to give the improved signal path and outstanding signal retention of ultra-pure copper conductors – but at a fraction of the price. Thanks to class-leading research and engineering, QED Golden Anniversary XT is the most affordable and attainable speaker cable to exploit the advantages of the continuous-casting process, with this hybrid theoretically improving the path for transients and high frequency detail not available using just OFC alone.

Low-Loss Ultra-Uniform Dielectric insulation

If a speaker cable is to perform to its maximum potential, it’s important that the dielectric material which insulates and protects the central conductors of the cable does so efficiently. Golden Anniversary XT uses a specially developed and formulated low-density polyethylene (‘LDPE’), which works in unison with the cable’s X-Tube Plus configuration to deliver a speaker cable that has high-efficiency and a dissipation factor that is barely measurable.

Airloc™ Forté banana plugs

Airloc™ is a specially developed cold-weld system for permanently attaching QED Forté banana plugs to the company’s entire range of speaker cables, Golden Anniversary XT included. The most vulnerable area of the speaker cable chain is the physical interface between the cable and the speaker or amplifier to which it’s connected – without effective termination, oxidation can occur, degrading the cable’s performance. By using a cold weld crimp-type termination, Forté banana plugs offer maximum resistance to oxidation – for the lifetime of the cable – by effectively turning the cable and the plug into a single, unified object.

QED Golden Anniversary XT is available now from QED retailers priced: £27 / €35 / $40 per metre.

And in pre-terminated options (available November 2023):

QED’s new Reference Ethernet cable has the bandwidth and headroom to deal with the highest of high-resolution audio – and beyond

British audio specialist QED introduces its Reference Ethernet cable, designed to provide the most accurate, most stable connection possible between networked devices. Perfect for connecting a high-resolution digital audio streamer to a local network, the Reference Ethernet has more than enough bandwidth to deal with the data rates required by 32 bit/384 kHz and DSD512 audio files. Painstakingly engineered, Reference Ethernet is a Class I Category 8.1 cable and can support 40G Ethernet – and so has the headroom to cope with even the most data-intensive applications.

Key features at a glance

  • Specifically designed for high-resolution audio up to 32 bit/384 kHz or DSD512 quality
  • Complies with Class I Category 8.1 standard
  • Supports 40G Ethernet
  • Ferrite insulation, low-loss dielectric and gold-plated Telegärtner plugs combine to deliver
    ultra-low jitter
  • 99.999% OFC, 24 AWG conductors with customised twist rates for lower inter-pair cross-talk
  • Arrives in stylish White Pearl finish

Specified to perform

QED has been designing and engineering class-leading and award-winning analogue and digital cables for almost 50 years – and the Reference Ethernet is the latest demonstration of the company’s expertise.

In order to keep signal noise and cross-talk to an absolute minimum, Reference Ethernet uses 99.999 % oxygen-free copper twisted-pairs – with a dissimilar twist rate for each pair – to maximise noise-rejection characteristics.

For minimal ‘insertion loss’ – which is the reduction of signal strength at the end of the cable compared to that at the start – Reference Ethernet uses an aluminium mylar wrap, within a foil wrap, within a ferrite-impregnated jacket. As a result, the cable comfortably exceeds the CAT 8 insertion loss standard. This over-specified arrangement also means Reference Ethernet easily outperforms the CAT 8 standard for ‘attenuation-to-crosstalk ratio’ which is an indicator of the margin by which it avoids introducing any errors into the data stream.

Reference Ethernet also performs way beyond the CAT 8 requirements where ‘return loss’ is concerned. Any impedance mismatch between the cable and the equipment it’s connected to can cause the signal to be reflected back and forth. Thanks to its precision-engineered, gold-plated  Telegärtner plugs with 360-degree shielded die-cast zinc bodies, reflections are minimised and all of the signal is delivered to the load.

This uncompromised specification and state-of-the-art engineering results in a cable with a maximum data rate of 40 Gb/s. This is well in excess of what is required to handle even the most demanding data streams, and means Reference Ethernet is easily able to cope with the highest of today’s high-resolution digital audio files and is future-proofed to handle whatever comes next.

The cable is finished in a stylish pearl white PVC jacket to compliment any hi-fi set-up.

The QED Reference Ethernet is available now from www.qed.co.uk (UK) and Independent retailers in the UK and from www.qedcables.com (US) and Independent retailers from next month, priced:

Innovative hybrid design

QED has been designing and engineering superior and award-winning AV analogue and digital cables for nearly five decades and the Performance Optical Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the culmination of this expertise.  The company’s innovative Ultra High Speed Active Optical Technology™ hybrid design combines copper core with optical fibre that resists data degradation over extremely long lengths – all without the need for an external power supply.

Pure copper conductor cables three metres in length or more will cause the 48 Gb/s HDMI signal to breakdown where it would no longer be reliably decoded at the other end. By replacing four of the nineteen copper cores with optical fibre, data transmissions will be unaffected by losses (due to impedance mismatch) or timing variances (due to crosstalk) over longer cable runs.

QED HDMI guarantee

All QED HDMI cables undergo stringent mandatory testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Centre to not only to ensure compatibility with the new 2.1 video standards but also to ensure low levels of electromagnetic radiation, to reduce the possibility of interference with wireless networks, streaming media players, Bluetooth devices and mobile phones.

The QED Ultra High Speed Active Optical Technology™ ensures this cable is fully certified, performing at the 48 Gb/s data rate with all the necessary attendant data and control signals demanded by HDMI 2.1 in lengths up to 20 metres – no matter what brand or combination of 2.1-compatible equipment being used.

Compliant with HDCP 2.2 and with full CEC, DDC, HDR, HEC and eARC compatibility, this cable has received the official stamp of approval from the HDMI Forum accredited laboratory in the form of the instantly recognisable Ultra High Speed Certification Program logo on the packaging. Just scan the QR code on the label using the official HDMI app to be reassured that the cable is a genuine QED Ultra Speed Active Optical HDMI cable.

Reaction to Fire certification

Professional installers or AV enthusiasts wishing to conceal the cable within the structure of a building can rest assured the cable’s the Low Smoke Zero Halogen jacket and internal components are all certified and fully compliant with the latest EN 50575:2014 regulations. This covers cables for general applications in construction works subject to reaction to fire requirements which are now in force throughout the UK and EU.

Clearly labelled plugs

The integrated circuit is built unobtrusively into the plug at each end of the cable to make the cable easy to run though the fabric of a building. Each plug is clearly labelled ‘DISPLAY’ and ‘SOURCE’ to ensure the cable is always installed correctly.

HDMI cabling over 20 metres

For any cable length requirements over 20 metres, QED offers the Performance Optical HDMI LSZH cable for transmission video speeds of 48Gb/s 8K@60Hz over 30 metre (£299.95), 40 metre (£349.95) and 50 metre (£399.95) runs.

The cable will also carry uncompressed 4K@120Hz video, while delivering the promised maximum compressed video resolution of up to 10K@120Hz. Lastly, Dynamic HDR* and Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC), are also supported no matter what brand or combination of HDMI 2.1 compatible equipment you are using.

QED Ultra High Speed HDMI cables have to undergo stringent mandatory testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Centre, not only to establish compatibility with the new 2.1 video standards, but also to ensure low levels of electromagnetic radiation, to reduce the possibility of interference with wireless networks, streaming media players, Bluetooth devices and mobile phones. This is realised through QED’s Triple-shielding design that further protects against interference for optimal signal quality.

QED is one of the first brands to officially adopt the new cable category in the form of the new Performance Ultra High Speed range. The cables have received the official stamp of approval from the HDMI Forum accredited laboratory in the form of the instantly recognizable Ultra High Speed Certification Program stickers. Just scan the QR code on the label using the official HDMI app to be reassured that the cable is a genuine QED Ultra Speed HDMI cable.

All the cables are completely backward compatible with HDMI 2.0b and 1.4b standards and are available in 1.5 and 3 metre lengths, which will ensure continued years of upgradeable video enjoyment at home.

QED unveils Reference Audio 40 interconnect with second generation Analoc™ plug technology

British audio specialists QED introduces the latest version of its award-winning Reference Audio 40 interconnect, featuring second generation Analoc™ plug technology. Representing yet another stride forward in analogue interconnect design from the original specialist cable company, this model builds on the success of the first generation Analoc™ low eddy current design by entirely removing all conductive material from the plug bodies for superior transparency, timing and audio signal integrity. The Reference Audio 40 remains the ultimate upgrade from budget interconnects for a cleaner, more detailed and dynamic sonic performance.

QED has been designing and engineering superior analogue and digital cables for more than 45 years, and its new Reference Audio 40 cable is informed by the results of the company’s exhaustive research into cable design since 1995.

All-new Analoc2™ design

The Analoc2™ design still features low bulk, high purity copper connectors alongside low mass metal barrels, but now cleverly substitutes high rigidity thermoplastic material for both the inner support structure and the cable strain relief to eliminate the detrimental effects of eddy currents. Although already smaller than in traditional bulk brass plugs, these unfavourable currents were still able to circulate weakly in the isolated metal body of the previous plug design. Now with the new material in place, these remnant resonant distortions are completely prevented from adversely affecting the information contained in the audio signal as it travels through the new plug.

To complete the RCA plug’s Analoc2™ upgrade and to help combat the skin effect, the hollow, gold (or rhodium) plated, high-purity copper signal-pins are retained, while the effectiveness of the slip ring which locks in place the similarly plated, pure copper ground-terminal as the barrels are tightened, has also been improved.

Complementary Conductor Technology

This technology improves timing and detail, retaining the rhythm of the original piece. Unlike conventional analogue interconnects, Reference Audio 40 utilises two Silver-plated 99.999% Oxygen Free Copper conductors of different diameters to carry the same audio signal. This has the effect of providing an alternative path for high frequency audio components which might otherwise become time smeared in a single audio pathway.

Ferrite cord insulation

A Zn/Mn Ferrite jacket is used within the cordage to absorb very high frequency noise components outside of the audible band that have an adverse effect on the micro-timing of the audio signal. When measured at very high frequencies, Reference Audio 40 cables exhibit cleaner signal transmission than standard audio interconnects. Further protection for the Silver Plated 99.999% Oxygen Free Copper (SPOFC) conductors comes in the form of a low loss, low density, dielectric foam Polyethylene (LDPE) inner jacket that minimises electrical energy loss in the cable insulation which can have a detrimental effect on the fidelity of the sound compared with cheaper PVC alternatives.

The QED Reference Audio 40 interconnect is available now in the UK/Europe and in the US from December, priced:

  • £99.95/€125/$139.95 (0.6m length)
  • £119.95/€149/$169.95 (1m length)
  • £149.95/€189/$209.95 (3m length)

QED enhances audio offering with new Reference XT40i, Performance Audio 40i and XT25 Bi-Wire cables

QED
has been designing and engineering superior AV cables for over 45 years, with its QED 79 strand cable, released in 1976, widely recognised as the world’s first “specialist” speaker cable – a product that demonstrated how cables could have a tangible impact on audio performance. Since then, the company has used extensive scientific research and computer-aided design techniques to ensure its products remain at the very cutting edge of technology.

That rich heritage and constant drive for innovation underpins QED’s latest products, announced today: the QED Reference XT40i speaker cable, QED Performance Audio 40i interconnect and QED XT25 Bi-Wire speaker cable. All cables deliver an enhanced sonic performance without compromising on their competitive price points.

QED Reference XT40i (available in October, priced £11 a metre / US pricing at the end of the release)

An update to 2014’s classic, award-winning XT40 speaker cable, the XT40i features several technological upgrades to further enhance its best-in-class premium performance.

QED’s extensive research has uncovered the importance of cable dielectric (insulation) in optimising the sonic performance of a cable. The XT40i has improved on an already successful cable by designing a groundbreaking Air Gap ™ dielectric construction. This technology reduces the cable’s dissipation factor and capacitance by half, resulting in vastly improved musical timing, a wider soundstage and improved bass control over its predecessor.

QED’s innovative proprietary X-Tube™ technology means the XT40i exhibits less distortion at high frequencies than standard speaker cables, improving overall performance through a level of timing and imaging usually found on much more expensive cables.

Elsewhere XT40i’s huge 4.0mm² cross sectional area lowers loop resistance, while its 99.999% oxygen-free copper construction offers improved conductivity over standard copper. These characteristics reduce listener fatigue and boost musicality, making longer listening sessions more comfortable and enjoyable.

As with all QED speaker cables, it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

QED Performance Audio 40i (available in October, priced from £39.95 / 0.6m / US pricing at the end of the release)

The Performance Audio 40 set a new standard in technological innovation for a mid-range analogue interconnect. Its successor, the Performance Audio 40i has undergone a complete overhaul on its predecessor with improvements made in almost all areas of the cable design, including, a QED first –  the introduction of Solid Core Complementary Conductors™ over the previous standard conductor design.

Designed as a response to the results of QED’s Genesis Report. these stereo interconnects’ Solid Complementary Conductor technology reduces capacitance by a quarter compared to the original model, resulting in an enlargement of the stereo sound-stage.

Another major innovation is the introduction of one Oxygen Free Copper Conductor and one Silver Plated Oxygen Free Copper Conductor to carry the same audio signal. The equivalent of having two cables in one this design helps provide an alternative route for high and low frequencies, reducing the “smearing” and disruption of the audio signal which would otherwise occur in a single, one material conductor configuration. The upshot is improved rhythm, enhanced clarity and tighter control.

Ferrite insulation technology has been retained from the Performance Audio 40 to absorb high frequency noise and decrease timing errors and deliver a cleaner signal, while the use of QED’s Anamate RCA plugs means a reduction in “eddy currents” and an improvement in high frequency detail.

As with all QED speaker cables, it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

QED XT25 Bi-Wire (available in October, priced £12 a metre / US pricing at the end of the release)

Building on the success of QED’s award-winning XT25 speaker cable, XT25 Bi-Wire is designed to bring the unparalleled performance of QED’s X-Tube™ cable technology and X-Quad geometry to an affordable bi-wire or bi-amp speaker cable.

This new bi-wire version delivers enhanced rhythmic accuracy and musicality with the X-Quad geometry lowering inductance to reveal more detail. QED’s proprietary X-Tube X-Tube™ technology, enables each frequency to pass with equal ease for a more balanced sound, while improving timing and stereo imaging.

Elsewhere, a 99.999% Oxygen-free copper construction increases conductivity for a purer sound, while a low-loss, low density Polyethylene jacket minimises electrical energy loss in the cable insulation which can adversely effect the sound compared with cheaper PVC alternatives. The result is the single most impressive pound-for-pound upgrade your system you can have.

Like all QED speaker cables, the XT25 Bi-Wire offers a lifetime guarantee.

QED XT5 and XT3 power cables promises clean, distortion-free current flow for audio electronics

British audio specialists QED introduces the XT5 and XT3 mains power cable duo, designed to deliver clean, distortion-free current flow and allows sensitive audio electronics to operate at their optimum level and deliver the best possible audio performance.

QED has invested considerable time and technology – along with over 45 years of cable technology expertise – to ensure the XT5 and XT3 power cables achieve the class-leading performance and superb value for money that its range of analogue and digital cables are renowned for.

QED’s acclaimed X-Tube technology – first seen in the company’s loudspeaker cable ranges – has been specifically tuned for the XT5 and XT3. To reduce the ‘proximity effect’ created when current density builds up in conductors nearest to each other, QED has applied its X-Tube technology by more effectively regulating current flow to audio equipment like stereo amplifiers.

As a result, the audio equipment is able perform as its designers intended.

To further shield the cable from radio frequency noise and mains-borne interference that can adversely affect the performance of audio electronics, QED has used a ferrite-impregnated inner jacket on the XT5 only. This effectively wraps the X-Tube cores in an impenetrable blanket of radio silence – absorbing high-frequency noise signals in this way has already proved successful in QED’s award-winning Audio 40 range of analogue and digital interconnects. The XT5 also features hand-wired audiophile IEC sockets.

In the XT5 and XT3, QED has created power cables that allow the smooth, controlled flow of mains current with minimal interference and for very high-end electronic components to perform to their absolute maximum potential. For more technical detail, please download the QED XT5 white paper:
